As more people get the internet the amount of domans registered grows. I currently have about 15 domain names. Some of these domains I use off and the others I develop permanantly. As an average cost of $8.99 per domain per year that works out to about $135 per year that I pay. Domains are so cheap that I don’t think twice before I purchase one. For every hour I work, I can buy two domain names.
At the current rate, almost all usefull domains will be registered within about the next 3 years. Unless a new .com killer is introduced, the domain industry will not go anywhere. How can the ICANN solve this? A simple solution would be to raise the cost of domain names. This would allow only serious domains to be registered, and only worth while domains to be renewed. What is a fair price? I would have to say around $50/year.
Domain Stats
- 62,707,613 domain have been registered as of 02/20/06
- 38,000,000 of those are registered by people from the USA
- About 3,245,470 domains expire each week
- About 3,745,470 domains are registered each week
Where would the extra money go? The extra $42 could go to building a faster and safer internet. Considering the amount of domains registered would go down if this rate was upped, ICANN would get about 1.5 billion dollars more. They could donate this money for ultra high speed internet to be available to everyone in Canada and the United States.
