Why do we buy magazines in the digital age? Magazines can be incredibly expensive and the articles that are worth reading can be found on the publisher’s website, yet we still shell out our hard earned money on magazines. Most magazines are between $3 and $6 on the news stand and around $2 to $4 if you subscribe.

I only have one paid subscription. For a birthday gift I was given a subscription to the fitness magazines “Men’s Health which is an exceptionally good read. I believe that the cost of a 1 year, 10 issue Men’s Health was around $30 or $3 per issue. The news stand price is $5.99 CDN so it is about ½ the price and I also get the issue one week before it hits stores. Through a promotion from Diggnation I also get EWeek, Computer World, and from time to time anther random title completely free.

I recently went to the bookstore to look for the latest “Computer World with Kevin Rose on the front cover. I eventually found out that they do not sell the magazine in Canada. I went online and could read the entire article for free, but I really wanted a hard copy. As a graphic designer I appreciate the work and time that is put into magazines and I have a hard time reading a magazine article in a web browser without any fancy graphics.

Since I am quite young I went straight into the digital music age yet it still feels strange when spending huge amounts of money on non-physical good. I really like having a physical goods and personally I think that some magazines are worth the money. From time to time it’s nice to have a magazine in your lap and sit outside flipping through the pages. Magazines can really take your attention from your work to something else. Go buy a magazine.

Time Machine can backup your Mac data onto either a hard drive or a server. You can search for backups by entering a date or time and you even get a visual representation of moving through time. It even works with iPhoto.

To obtain hosting services from (mt) Media Temple and be able to provide payment
via Pay Pal is rather simple. To start, just submit the order online at
www.mediatemple.net and specify what package you would like to order:

http://www.mediatemple.net/services/webhosting/

* Please note that you must pre-pay for at least one year*

Once in the order process you will encounter six screens that ask for, among
other things, domain name, company name, address, city, state, zip, etc. Then
you’ll encounter the payment screen. To get through the payment screen, enter
Visa as the credit card and for the credit card number use 4111111111111111 a
four and fifteen one’s with an expiration date two to three years in the
future. This is just to “trick” our system into letting you precede with an
order.

Once the order has been completed, call the Sales Department at 877-578-4000
and ask us to complete the order informing us that you desire to pay by Pay
Pal. Your account will then be setup and an email with your login information
to your (ac) Account Center will be sent to you. You can access the account
center at:

https://accountcenter.mediatemple.net/

Once you get your account number, send the transaction in your account center
by clicking on “Make one time payment”.

Just was you think that AOL can not get any lower it turned out  they could. AOL has just released search data from it’s users.  The data contains all searches made by those 500 000 users in a 3 month period of 2006.

AOL must have missed the uproar over the DOJ’s demand for “anonymized search data last year that caused all sorts of pain for Microsoft and Google.
-Tech Crunch

The thing that is angering everybody is that AOL released this information without the permission of the users involved. Although the username is converted to an ‘id’ people can analyze the search data and could find out the user. If somebody search their name on AOL’s search and then searched their friend’s names this could open up some safety.

User 491577 searches for “florida cna pca lakeland tampa, “emt school training florida, “low calorie meals, “infant seat, and “fisher price roller blades. Among user 39509’s hundreds of searches are: “ford 352″, “oklahoma disciplined pastors, “oklahoma disciplined doctors, “home loans, and some other personally identifying and illegal stuff I’m going to leave out of here. Among user 545605’s searches are “shore hills park mays landing nj, “frank william sindoni md, “ceramic ashtrays, “transfer money to china, and “capital gains on sale of house.

After just looking through a few lines of the searching I can say that these are actually on the safe side. I’m leaving out the worst of it - searches for names of specific people, addresses, telephone numbers, illegal drugs, social security numbers and more. There is no question that law enforcement, employers, or friends could figure out who some of these people are.

This is incredibly strange because AOL uses a rebranded version of Google’s search.  You can just imagine the fit that Google will through when they realize that people can view some of the top keywords which can help a SEO expert and also help people with Adsense and Adwords .

You can of course download the full 439MB file from this server: AOL DATA (439 MB)

So you made an amazing CSS layout and have tested it in Firefox, Safari, and Opera but when you open it in Internet Explorer it’s all messed up. If you know the IE CSS problems in stylesheet then I have a fix for you. By adding the code below you can select which stylesheet to load for each browser.

The first section of code tells the browser which stylesgeet to load. The second section check to see if the user is using Internet Explorer. If the user is using IE then the second section’s stylesheet will load and the first stylesheet will be disregarded. Our course, if the user is not using IE then the first stylesheet will be loaded.

The following instructions have been tested and work for roundcube_webmail_0.1-beta2.tar.gz

Step 1.
I’d suggest setting up a subdomain, in which case go to Domains > Subdomains and select Add New Domain / Sub-Domain and select an appropriate subdomain.

Step 2.
Create a new database via the Goodies > MySQL section of the control panel, taking note of the details - host name, database name, username and password.

Step 3.
Wait 24 hours for the subdomain to be set up.
While you’re waiting, there are some things you can do.

Step 4.
Download the latest version of Roundcube to your PC and decompress it using a unzip utility that can handle .tar.gz files. ZipGenius will do the trick.

Step 5.
Using a text edtior, open db.inc.php, which is located in the config directory

Edit line 21:
$rcmail_config[’db_dsnw’] = ‘mysql://roundcube:pass@localhost/roundcubemail’;

to reflect your database settings (see step 2)

$rcmail_config[’db_dsnw’] = ‘mysql://database_username:database_password@hostname/database_name’;

then save the file.

Step 6.

Using a text editor, open index.php, which is located in the main directory.

Copy and paste all of the code from this file to your index.php file.
then save the file.

Step 7.
Upload the Roundcube files to the directory your subdomain is pointing to. The file index.php should be sitting at the highest level of your subdomain.

Step 8.
Log into your database via the Goodies > MySQL section of the control panel.
Click on the SQL tab.
Using a text editor, open the file mysql.initial.sql, located in the SQL directory.
Paste the contents of this file into the text box and click Go.

Step 9.
Point your browser to the subdomain where you installed Roundcube and with any luck you should see a login screen.

Enter your email login details, not your database login details.

If you’ve forgotten your email username or password, go to the Users > Password section of the control panel.

The server should be mail.yourdomain.com

Voila, the contents of your inbox should appear on the screen!
