Digg is a clone to slashdot like the mac is a clone to an IBM.
Just because they’re in the same category doesn’t make them clones. You’d have to actually copy a site and make it look similar to be a clone. (go ahead, look up the definition of clone)
Besides, he wasn’t branded a genius because of Digg, he was branded a genius because of TechTV when it didn’t suck.
Keving hit gold with digg, congrats. Dan is a n00b, from start to finish, and kevin’s tech knowledge is not good.
Both are fine for the layman - just like techtv - neither are what i would consider geeks. and dan.. well.. wasn’t that dood doing dell tech support or something? I remember on TSS he barely seemed to know ANYTHING and was VERY nervous on camera - on more than one occasion i wondered how he actually got and kept that job.
No, Bill Gates made an promise to IBM that they would sell them their awesome OS (which didn’t exist), bought DOS, and relicensed it to IBM thereafter. The original promise would have shot himself in the foot if it wasn’t for a good stroke of luck
Bill Gates rarely did code of his own, rather he relied on his more intelligent computer science friends to do it for them. He then sold their product and kept most of the money.
Bill Gates bought or stole most of the software that has his name on it. He bought DOS, he bought the defrag program used in 2000 and XP. He claimed that a defrag program was not needed. Remember the 98 demonstration when 98 crashed right about the time he said it was the most stable version of Windows ever released. He stole Windows from Mac. I have an old Apple IIgs (still have because it was my first computer and how I got it), The OS layout looks strikingly similarly to Windows 3.1. Microsoft just changed it around a little, gave it a little different look. But the ideas and functions are the same. All the credit of what Microsoft has should go to the subordinates of Bill Gates.
I miss watching Kevin Rose on TSS, if for nothing else but the tech news part of the show. There were a lot of cool things that were done and discussed on that show. It really started to suck when he left.
This is why we have the internet. So that a couple of nerds that never would normally interact with one another because they are afraid to leave thier mother’s house can argue semantics and compare apples to oranges.
You are all idiots. Just because you have logical sense doesn’t mean you have common sense, you have to go out into society to develop that.
Kevin Rose is a kid that went out of his house and did something instead of just talking about it. Bill Gates did the same thing.
It is alleged that Kevin stole his idea from slashdot and Bill Gates stole his software from shut-in coders.
The way I see it you are all missing the one thing that Gates and Rose have that you don’t and that is initiative. It isn’t something you are born with, it comes when you realize that your life sucks and something has to be done about it no matter how crazy it is.
I get sick of “DO UR RESEARCH” people too. What are you a historian? People who say that never learn common sense either.
Rose is better than you.
Bill Gates is better than you.
Digg is cool.
I use Ubuntu Linux.
That’s right, I’m a nerd that met sunlight. I can have an opinion. You suck, that’s my opinion.
And Apple stole the GUI from Xerox — so what’s your point?
Apple’s lastest OS is BSD — so what’s your point?
And Macs didn’t crash back in 98? Must have just been
mine. Today we have the Spinning Beach Ball of Death,
or apps that close themselves — Final Cut Pro *cough*.
Microsoft aquires other companies to get their technology? How is this atypical to tech corps.?
But, alas, the convo is about Digg, which is not an
OS.
Yes, Kevin is fun and entertaining, but he’s hardly
technical.

What is all this crud?
Whats slashdot, and who cares about Gates, he’s chrashing microsoft. Linux is the best, and yes, Geeks can be Cool.
You guys are like five year olds for crying out loud!
Stop posting and get out into the world…
(THIS IS RHETORICAL)
What does any of this Digg debate have to do with ‘The Broken’ anyway? Yes Revision 3 and digg are interconnected, but besides Kevin being in ‘The Broken’, it has nothing to do with digg.
Kevin Rose actual asked COmmander Taco of SlashDot about wether they had plans to implement what he was thinking. The answer was no.
Those of you who think Kevin is over rated or that he is branded a genius are missing the point. It’s not about Digg in particular or abour K. Rose himself. It’s about him turning an idea into $$.
I’ve met Kevin…he’s humble with his success. He understands he got oppurtunity not necessarily afforded to everyone. Don’t be a hater…start working on your own ideas.
i just want to add that kevin rose didnt steal the slashdot idea he did what most people love to talk about. he took an idea someone else had and made it better. im a big kevin rose fan but i cant compare him to biull gates after all bill gates is a shrewd business man and kevin rose even at the age of 30 or however old he is, is still a kid. instead of bashing things why not chill have a beer.
Why debate over whether or not Kevin is overrated? Seems irrelevant and useless. However, for the comments on diggs similarity to Slashdot, I cannot see much, and after being an avid reader of /. for many years, I must say I’m still impressed with Diggs innovations.
Kevin Rose not technical? Have you not seen any of his shows? He may be overrated…I dont seem to think so. But it seems like he’s starting to be more law biding now then when we use to know him as the Dark Tipper. Thats where The Broken comes in. This show lets us remember the times of the dark tips and hacks. Systm…though more clean then the Broken is the same thing. And Digg, well he just made a site(practically something on his own time–side project if you will) that is almost ran entirely by its users. he didnt help make digg to start a revolution…so if thats a bad thing then we should all just get AOL and let them run our lives. The man is almost 30…middle aged almost…who keeps calling him a kid…im a kid, im only 20. if you’re comparing rose to gates then rose has a long way to go to becoming the richest man alive–and rose is already 10 years behind in accomplishment.
Im not an apple fanboy and Im not a microsoft fanboy, but still I try to know even a little about them… (PS I’ve never owned an apple)
Apple didnt steal from Xerox, the Xerox Parc guys knew the project was dead in the water, they (with exception to one woman) gave the idea to Jobbs, they let him borrow a system to do what he would with it… That’s not stealing!
I’m sure it is true that Gates stole apples idea, but Shoot Abarrel is right, he and Paul Allen used to code binary for the altair, before they even founded Microsoft. If Microsoft didnt steal Apples interface, the likelyhood of Apple being as popular as it is today is pretty low, Microsoft had a massive market penetration compared (thanks to IBM) which made the GUI inteface much more common in homes.
He’s wrong about Kevin being overrated though. Although I’m not sure if the dude has had an original idea, it doesnt make him a bad man though, much like Bill Gates, Kevin has brought good ideas to the masses! Im not sure who did the first IPTV segment (I *think* it was From the Shadows) but Kevin certainly made it popular with The Broken and Systm, sure Digg is like slashdot, its not a ripp off, LP is right, Rose did talk with Cmdr Taco before even launching digg, they met up for lunch and when Rose saw that Cmdr Taco had no interests in having a user based digg, Rose decided to take the project unto himself. If the slashdot folks are bitter about this, then why do the majority use Linux (whats that you say? Linux is based off of Unix? You mean like Digg is based off of Slashdot??).
At any rate, Kevin is a cool geek, I’d love to chill with him and have a few brewskies, I only have respect for the guy. I for one cant wait for the next installment of The Broken, I’ve loved the show from ep1.
Just as a side note, Dan isnt as cool as Kevin, but Alex Albrecht is cooler than both of them, and Keith Harrison is cooler than all 3.
Comments on this site are terrible. I think Rose has put in his time and has a great history with one of the members of the TechTV days and was lucky enough to get lumped in with Leo, Patrick, and all the others before that network was turned to crap. Wasn’t a problem for me, after 3 years of looking at slashdot everyday, to look at digg everyday. I actually find myself looking at slashdot 2-3 times a week where I look at digg daily.
But, what the hell does that have to do with The Broken = Dan Huards only way to get in front of a camera, I like the goofball, he’ll never be “comfortable” in front of a camera - it’s funny as hell watching him.

Kevin Rose is so overrated.
He makes a Slashdot Clone, and is branded a genius.
Geez.

Kevin Rose can hardly be compared to Bill Gates.
Gates coded in tight Assembly and was part of a
revolution.
Kevin takes Shashdot, adds a voting system and
thinks he created the wheel.
He’s like P. Diddy rapping over an old hit, and
thinking he did something.
Digg is played.

While i agree digg is not a clone of slashdot, Rose and digg really are overrated.
September 4th, 2006 at 12:35 pm
Doger, learn your history.
Microsoft had been selling software long
before the IBM PC meeting.
The “luck” you are describing was infact a
shrewd business move. IBM thought they were
making a toy, Gates knew better.
Camparing Kevin Rose to Gates is silly. There is
no “technology” to Digg — it’s a voting/forum/blog.
Besides Kevin didn’t even code Digg HIMSELF,
he paid someone else to do it. Gates wrote
all the code when Microsoft first started.
September 4th, 2006 at 12:47 pm

Good site, though, but that’s because of the popularity. Without the readers it would be worthless.
