I have been on Media Temple’s grid server for exactly one month now but I still don’t think I should post a full review yet. I do however want to share some negatives of (gs). Since this entire website is database driven if the MySQL server goes down, then the whole site is down. Every few hours this website is not accessable because the MySQL is down. It’s not just my site, I usually check out other (gs) websites like MattBrett.com and they are always down as well. This is very inconvenient for everybody and it seems to always happen when I either want to post or during the prime times.
One of the many other problems is the Urchin Stats. For the past few weeks they have read 0 for everything. You can click through everything and it all has no data. Before the migration to (gs) they worked great. I don’t really use these stats but I like to compare then with my Mint stats just to see trends and differences.
Every time I have a problem I never want to report it because they “probably” already know of the problem, but I guess not. I ocationally think that a little downtime is alright but then I realize that I am playing almost 4 times what I was with (ss) and getting worse service. The (mt) marketing guy said on Talkcrunch that they have a “120% uptime guarantee” which translates to “We never go down”. He said that they would actually pay us if it went down. All I can say is that I am still waiting for my check. I have my site monitored with a cheap utility and it only checks the site every 5 minutes and it catches this site down about 1% of the time. This is unacceptable.

Same here. For me it isn’t only MySQL; Apache goes down as well. The reason I chose MT was because of their reputation. While they may not be completely at fault for their server outages they’re facing (they must’ve got a LOT of sign-ups for gs), they definitely have to do something about this. They *are* raking in the cashes, after all.
Anyway, I had thought that the problem with my site was the coding (I run a hand-written CMS). Apparently not.

Thats not the only thing. When you do a back up of the site from their control panel, expect a trojan horse in your computer that takes over your whole computer with a key logger. Thats not a joke!

Yes yes ye, mt is constantly down. All (gs) customers are having the same problem. Mediatemple is offering “The last hosting plan you ‘ll ever need, I am for sure we will never going to need a new one after you had this one and its going to be the last plan we will want to have with mt. Nobody knows when all these bugz are going to end up, but there is no time to wait for mt – worst hosting provider of the month to anything else. All month they was working and there is no positive result only bugz, problems, and down time for all of (gs) customers. So time look for some one else, they quickly lost all reputation that they had. I have no wish to help them anymore and no hope that they going to fix this soon. For the past month I call them over 50 times, I submitted over 50 tickets and I saw my site down everyday. No more chance to looser. Mediatemple you stink and am leaving you !!!

…are identical, not to mention ridiculous: keyloggers? C’mon, I don’t think so.
A lot of people have been having probs (and I’m not moving in because of the generally negative feedback on (gs), but just thought other people considering oughta know there’s some coordinated anti-mt slack chat around.

Agreed. I’ve been having a horrible experience with (mt), too, and I’m a fairly new customer… I complained enough so they gave me 3 free months, so at least I have some time to see if it improves before moving away (though I still might since they’re overpriced for all this downtime and other nonsense).
The (mt) support is horrible, too, since they just respond to every issue with a template email saying the issue is affecting everyone.
I hosted with DreamHost back in the day, and just may return to them…

Well I hope this is just a crock from their competition because I am just moving a site to them. I will not be impressed if I have to set it all up and it down 1% of the time.
BTW - Hosting forums and the like are full of the most bogus reviews from the hosting company stooges themselves. Anyone can see that they get three different people to have a fake conversation about the wonderful time they are having and how great it all is.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the negativity approach works as well. All you have to do is badmouth a major company and say x company has resolved all this and I’m having fun their and in roll the dollars. If they spent the money on hardware instead of free holidays for the staff then maybe we would all have more reliable hosting. Woops.

Graeme,
I ran a site with them for a month. Thankfully it was only a test site and nothing live was on there becuase it went down all the time. When I asked for help all I got was a standard response which had nothing to do with my problems. The only quick response I got was when I closed my account, I was still getting reports on the problems I had logged for 2 months afterwards.
I really do have nothing to do with any hosting company, if you can did up ip history you will see the website linked to in this post used to be hosted there.
MT has a great idea, but it isn’t solid, and until it is I suggest you stay away from them.
